LIS OTD Climatology Data Sets

This climatology viewer cycles through a series of images for each dataset, showing global flash rate density averaged over the 17 years of the TRMM LIS and OTD missions.

Dataset acronyms are defined below and links provided to access the data. Display color scale is shown below the Cesium display.
For datasets with one or more images per day, you can customize the range of images to display. Select “customize” on the right and adjust selection below the Cesium display.
The display can be expanded to view all the images. The animation rate of image display is pre-set but can be changed by moving the green triangle on the dial at the left bottom corner.

The LIS/OTD Climatology data sets consist of gridded climatologies of total lightning flash rates seen by the spaceborne Optical Transient Detector (OTD) and Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS) on the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite.

Both products have ~3 month smoothing, so the 'daily data' adds little useful information compared to that in the much smaller LRMTS files.
