TRMM LIS VHR Climatology Data Sets

This climatology viewer cycles through a series of images for each dataset, showing global flash rate density averaged over the 16 years of the TRMM LIS mission.
  • Dataset acronyms are defined below and links provided to access the data. Display color scale is shown below the Cesium display.
  • For datasets with one or more images per day, you can customize the range of images to display. Select “customize” on the right and adjust selection below the Cesium display.
  • The legend for lightning bolt sizes representing the top 500 lightning hotspots is also below the Cesium display. You can toggle on/off the hotspot data independently from other data.
  • The display can be expanded to full window using the icon in the bottom right of the display

The TRMM LIS 0.1 Degree Very High Resolution Gridded Climatology data collection consists of a set of gridded climatologies constructed from individual observations made by the Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS) on the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite (data also at GHRC). Complex algorithms are used to estimate total flash rate density (number of flashes per square kilometer per year) based on the flashes observed by the instrument and the amount of time it viewed a given area.

This Very High Resolution (VHR) Gridded Lightning Climatology Collection consists of five lightning climatologies (links to data products provided below): the full climatological mean (VHRFC), monthly (VHRMC), diurnal (VHRDC), annual cycle (VHRAC), and seasonal (VHRSC). These gridded climatologies include annual mean flash rate density, mean diurnal cycle of flash rate density, and the mean annual cycle of flash rate density with daily, monthly, or seasonal resolution. Details of dataset construction are in the Albrecht et al. 2016 publication. The publication also lists the lighting hotspots on Earth. These can be plotted on the display by checking the box under the Overlay Lightning Hotspots section to the right.
