CAMEX-4 DC-8 Forward and Nadir Video
Table of Contents
General Information
The NASA DC-8 aircraft is equipped with several video cameras used to provide outside views to scientists and crewmembers who otherwise might not have the opportunity to view a particular scene. Cameras are mounted in the cockpit viewing directly forward along the flight path, out to the port side of the aircraft, and directly downward (nadir). Additionally, there are cameras that focus on the radar scope and (for CAMEX-4) viewing the C-STAR instrument. In addition to the video cameras are digital feeds from the navigator station showing current position, flight track and winds, and an entire 'page' devoted to ICATS data.
This dataset consists of videotapes showing either the forward or nadir camera view. Each video has a timestamp. In addition, intercom communications in the rear of the aircraft (scientists, mission managers) provide audio for the tapes.
Video Naming Conventions
Videotapes (up to four per flight) use the following naming convention:
c4dvid_2001.ddd_yy####_vvvvv_N
where ddd is julian date
#### is mission number
vvvvv is "forward" or "nadir" view indicator
N is sequential tape number of tape in the total set
Examples of tape names:
c4dvid_2001.215_010403_forward_1
c4dvid_2001.215_010403_nadir_2
The following lists flights, dates and tapes for each mission.
