Cloud to Ground Lightning System (CGLSS)

Data Owner/Home Organization:
Kennedy Space Center
Dataset Description:
The Cloud-to-Ground Lightning Surveillance System (CGLSS) utilizes a network of gated, broadband electric and magnetic field sensors to detect the waveform signatures that are characteristic of return strokes in lightning, and the high-current components of cloud-to-ground lightning flashes. When a proper signature is detected in a given time-domain at two or more known locations, the coincident times-of-arrival and magnetic directions can be used to compute the points where return strokes strike the ground. These data stretch over a 5-mile radius from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida in ASCII format.
What is this data good for?:
Cloud-to-ground lightning detection
