IFloodS

IFloodS APU dataset published

GHRC published the GPM Ground Validation Autonomous Parsivel Unit (APU) IFloodS dataset, collected from several sites in eastern Iowa during the spring of 2013. The APU dataset for the Iowa Flood Studies (IFloodS) Field Experiment provides precipitation data including precipitation drop size, counts, and distribution. The APU is an optical disdrometer based on single particle extinction that measures particle size and fall velocity. This APU consists of the Parsivel, which was developed by OTT in Germany, and its support systems, which were designed and built by the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

Two GPM D3R datasets published this week

GHRC has published two GPM Ground Validation Dual-frequency Dual-polarized Dopper Radar (D3R) datasets, for the GCPEX (January and February 2012) and IFloodS (May-June 2013) campaigns. The D3R is a fully polarimetric, scanning weather radar system operating at the nominal frequencies of 13.91 GHz and 35.56 GHz covering a maximum range of 30 km. These GPM Ground Validation Dual-frequency Dual-polarized Doppler Radar (D3R) datasets are in the netCDF format. Browse images are also available in .png format.

IFloodS NPOL dataset published

GHRC published the GPM Ground Validation NASA S-Band Dual Polarimetric (NPOL) Doppler Radar IFloodS dataset which data was collected during the Iowa Flood Studies (IFloodS) campaign April through June 2013. The data provides Doppler velocity, precipitation rate and radar reflectivity in the Universal Radar Format (UF).

IFloodS 2DVD dataset published

GHRC published the GPM Ground Validation Two-Dimensional Video Disdrometer (2DVD) IFloodS dataset. This data was collected during the GPM Ground Validation Iowa Flood Studies (IFloodS) Field Experiment April through June 2013 in northeastern Iowa. The daily tar files contain ASCII data with information for raindrop size distribution and hydrometeors.

IFloodS Met One Rain Gauge Pairs dataset published

Global Hydrology Resource Center (GHRC) has published the dataset GPM Ground Validation Met One Rain Gauge Pairs IFloodS. Twenty-five tipping bucket rain gauge pairs were deployed during the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Ground Validation (GV) Iowa Flood Studies (IFloodS) mission, which took place in Iowa during April-June 2013. Along with the disdrometers these rain gauges provided an additional means for directly measuring rainfall during the campaign. Two different models of these rain gauges, which are manufactured by MetOne Instruments, Inc., were used. The Model 380 gauges have a 30.5 cm diameter catchment funnel and a resolution of 0.2 mm of liquid water for each tip. The Model 370 gauges have a 20.3 cm diameter catchment funnel and a resolution of 0.01 inches.

IFloodS Met One Rain Gauge Pairs dataset updated

GHRC has updated the GPM Ground Validation Met One Rain Gauge Pairs IFloodS dataset, which now has a more extended set of gauge files and also now includes “gmin” files that are interpolated to provide a one-minute rain rate. These data were collected from twenty-five tipping bucket rain gauge pairs deployed during the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Ground Validation (GV) Iowa Flood Studies (IFloodS) mission occurring in Iowa during April-June 2013. Along with the disdrometers these rain gauges provided an additional means for directly measuring rainfall during the campaign. The Model 380 Precipitation Gauge, which is manufactured by MetOne Instruments, Inc., was used. The Model 380 gauges have a 30.5 cm diameter catchment funnel and a resolution of 0.2 mm of liquid water for each tip. The dataset guide is also now available.

2DVD guide document updated to include IFloodS

GHRC has updated the composite guide for GPM Ground Validation Two-Dimensional Video Disdrometer (2DVD) to include the Iowa Flood Studies (IFloodS) Field Experiment campaign information, data format and citation. The guide also covers the following experiments:Light Precipitation Evaluation Experiment (LPVEx), Midlatitude Continental Convective Clouds Experiment (MC3E) and GPM Cold-season Precipitation Experiment (GCPEx).

Guide for D3R for IFloodS and GCPEx published

GHRC has published the GPM Ground Validation Dual-frequency Dual-polarized Dopper Radar (D3R) guide for two missions: Iowa Flood Studies (IFloodS) and the GPM Cold Season Precipitation Experiment (GCPEx). The D3R is a fully polarimetric, scanning weather radar system operating at the nominal frequencies of 13.91 GHz and 35.56 GHz covering a maximum range of 30 km. The Doppler velocity, radar reflectivity, and spectrum width are provided in the data in the netCDF format. Browse images are also available in .png format.

IFloodS NEXRAD datasets and guide published

GHRC has published the GPM Ground Validation NEXRAD IFloodS datasets collected from four sites during March 29, 2013 to June 18, 2013 for the GPM Iowa Flood Studies (IFloodS) which occurred in eastern Iowa. The Next Generation Weather Radar system (NEXRAD) comprises more than 159 Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) sites throughout the United States and select overseas locations. The GPM Ground Validation NEXRAD IFloodS data files are available as Level 2 binary files, and provide radar reflectivity. More information including the Citation and DOIs can be found in their Guide.
