May 18 Mission Scientist Report

Flight Date:
Wed, 05/18/2011

Potential ER-2 mission for widespread rain and rain showers over Colorado on Wednesday were canceled in order to provide opportunity for instrument engineers to work on COSMIR, which is red (down).

We met at 1500 CDT for an afternoon weather update.  We concluded that convection, likely supercellular, might fire this afternoon in Northern Oklahoma.  We decided to have the Citation standby for working the anvil region of any supercells that developed within 100 km of NPOL.  We arrived at SGP-CG by 1700 CDT and Citation was ready to go shortly thereafter.  We waited and watched for convection that ultimately never fired.  The cap was too strong and it was too cold and cloudy with no upper level support to break the cap.
