ER-2 Flight Summary for 07/25/2005
Sortie Number: 05-9034
Take off: 0200
Landing: 1000
Mission Description:
The ER-2 mission was to overfly Tropical Storm Gert as it was making landfall near Tampico on the eastern coast of Mexico. The NOAA 43 aircraft did not fly a coordinated mission with NASA, but the NOAA 42 flew a mission into TS Gert earlier during the day.
Mission Objectives:
The objective of the mission was to observe orographic rain patterns and possible passive microwave signatures of inland flooding.
Mission Notes:
The mission was designed to overfly two Mexican mountain ranges to sample orographic rain patterns while Tropical Storm Gert was making landfall. The intersection point of three rivers was also overflown three times during the mission to monitor passive microwave signatures of inland flooding. The ER-2 first flew a south to north leg over a Mexican mountain range along the 99.0 W longitude between 21.0 - 22.0 N latitude and then headed northeast to roughly 23.12 N, 97.0 W to set up an east to west leg along 23.12 N out to roughly 100.0 W. The aircraft flew this leg three times before terminating it on the western end to turn southeast to the river intersection point which was in the general vicinity of 22.8 N, 98.8 W. After this, the aircraft exited Mexican airspace to underfly the Aqua satellite before returning to Costa Rica. The Mexican Tampico radar operated throughout the mission and might be able to provide an additional ground-based data set.
Other Mission Assets:
Ticosondes were launched.
