ER-2 Flight Summary for 07/15/2005

Sortie Number:  05-9028
Take off:  0600
Landing: 1240

Mission Description:

This report covers the night mission, the second of five consecutive missions for the NOAA P3s and the first of two in this system for the NASA ER2. This is the only time in TCSP when we had the opportunity to investigate a potential genesis case in the EASTPAC more or less as planned before going into the field.

Mission Objectives:

 There were 5 consecutive P3 missions 12 hours apart, approximately as follows (all times UTC): 1700 14 July - 0100 15 July 0500 15 July - 1300 15 July also with ER2 (This mission is the subject of this report) 1700 15 July - 0100 16 July 0500 16 July - 1300 16 July also with ER2 1700 16 July - 0100 17 July

Mission Notes:

The previous P3 mission 12 hours earlier identified a weak low level cyclonic shear zone extending WSW-ENE from about 90-95 W and about 12 N. The coordinated flight pattern assumed a westward motion and planned to cross this shear zone in several places. The coordination between the P3 and the ER2 was excellent. As planned, when the P3 flight track passed near but not across convective systems, the P3 scientist gave the ER2 offset coordinates, as on the outbound (westward) leg, when the ER2 was sent across a line near 9 N while the P3 stayed at 10 N. Later, near the center of the shear zone near 12 N 96.5 W, the flight line was adjusted to cross a significant MCS mostly in the stratiform stage, and the ER2 flew directly over the P3 while the P3 tail radar was put in continuous (vertically scanning) mode. Late in the mission the ER2 crossed some strong convection near 14 N 95.5 W while the P3 deviated about 5 nm to the south, covering the ER2 track closely with Doppler in F/AST mode.
