GHRC News

During December 1-15, GHRC DAAC staff and the MSFC Lightning Science Team supported a Payload Rack Checkout Unit (PRCU) for ISS LIS and other instruments in the DoD STP-H5 (Space Test Program-Houston 5) package. The ISS-LIS will be flown as a hosted payload on the STP-H5 mission, which is scheduled for launch in summer 2016 aboard a SpaceX launch vehicle for a 2-4 year or longer mission. In this test we received simulated LIS observations, instrument housekeeping data, ISS ephemeris and Star Tracker data, verifying data ingest networks and software.

GHRCDAAC published the GRIP Hurricane Imaging Radiometer (HIRAD) V1 dataset. This dataset contains brightness temperatures at 5 GHz and is an update to the earlier Version 0 GRIP HIRAD dataset. The data were collected during the Genesis and Rapid Intensification Processes (GRIP) experiment in 2010 for Hurricanes EARL and KARL. HIRAD is a hurricane imaging, single-pol passive C-band radiometer with both cross-track and along-track resolution that measures strong ocean surface winds through heavy rain from an aircraft or space-based platform. Its swath width is approximately 60 degrees in either direction.

The Olympics Mountain Experiment (OLYMPEX), the last of the planned Ground Validation field experiments for the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission, began in mid-November and will continue through February 2016.  The Global Hydrology Resource Center Distributed Active Archive Center (GHRC DAAC) developed and is maintaining the OLYMPEX portal, a collaboration site that enables science teams to upload a variety of planning materials, including daily forecast presentations, plan of the day reports, mission scientist and instrument reports. Flight reports from the NASA Ames Mission Tool Suite (MTS) are being collected into the portal as well.  GHRC is ingesting and making available for display on the portal several low latency ancillary datasets, including GOES imagery and radar data from National Weather Service stations.  All OLYMPEX data products will be archived at GHRC DAAC for public access as part of the GPM GV collection.

Global Hydrology Resource Center Distributed Active Archive Center (GHRC DAAC) has updated all published data download links from “ftp://*” to “https://*”, for which Earthdata login is required. This update will be propagated to the ESDIS Common Metadata Repository (CMR) through normal metadata updates. Users will now be directed to the Earthdata login before downloading data, though documentation and browse imagery remain openly accessible. In preparation for this change, we have created an Earthdata Login information page, posted announcements on the GHRC web site and in HyDRO, our local data discovery and access system. Anonymous FTP data downloads will still be supported, though no longer advertised.

GCPEX logoGlobal Hydrology Resource Center Distributed Active Archive Center (GHRC DAAC) published the GPM Ground Validation Aerosol and Water Vapor Lidar Quicklooks GCPEx dataset in the Global Precipitation Monitoring (GPM) mission Ground Validation collection for the GPM Cold-season Precipitation Experiment (GCPEx). This dataset contains imagery generated from the GCPEx campaign during January - March 2012 in Canada.  Imagery includes plots of daily aerosol lidar backscatter ratio, and vertically resolved profile of water vapor mixing ratios.
