GHRC News

Global Hydrology Resource Center Distributed Active Archive Center (GHRC DAAC) Manager Dr. Rahul Ramachandran (NASA/MSFC), DAAC Operations Manager Helen Conover and Software Engineer Manil Maskey (both University of Alabama in Huntsville) attended the 2015 EOSDIS System Engineering Technical Interchange Meeting held November 3-5 at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.  Ramachandran presented the GHRC Metrics Dashboard in the “Sharing is Caring” Systems Engineering track; Maskey presented “Metadata Curation - identifying relevant datasets and data variables” in the “Getting the Most out of Software” track; and Conover served as rapporteur for the “Focus on Process Topics” track.  A focus of the meeting was cross-DAAC collaboration, and to that end the GHRC and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) DAAC agreed to work together to adapt the GHRC Metrics Dashboard for use at ORNL, and the ORNL DAAC’s Semi-Automated data ingest System (SAuS) for use at GHRC.

IPHEX logoThe Global Hydrology Resource Center (GHRC) published two datasets from the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission ground validation (GV) Integrated Precipitation and Hydrology Experiment (IPHEx): Cloud Radar System (CRS) and Total Sky Imager. The IPHEx experiment was conducted in North Carolina during the months April-June 2014. The Cloud Radar System dataset provides high-resolution profiles of reflectivity and Doppler velocity at aircraft nadir along the flight track.  The CRS instrument is a 94 GHz (W-band; 3 mm wavelength) Doppler radar developed for autonomous operation in the NASA ER-2 high-altitude aircraft and for ground-based operation. The Total Sky Imager dataset includes data from the Yankee Scientific TSI880 Total Sky Imager instrument, part of the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) ACHIEVE ground-based mobile laboratory. The TSI880 instrument is an automatic, full-color sky imager system providing real-time digital display of daytime sky conditions; the output of the TSI880 is full color digital images.

The Global Hydrology Resource Center Distributed Active Archive Center (GHRC DAAC) has provided draft Interface Control Documents (ICDs) for the initial group of datasets chosen for Global Imagery Browse Services (GIBS) as part of the Big Earth Data Initiative (BEDI) effort. These draft ICDs will be reviewed by the GIBS team and revised as needed before GIBS image generation begins at GHRC.

The Global Hydrology Resource Center Distributed Active Archive Center (GHRC DAAC) has published another core dataset in the Hurricane and Severe Storm Sentinel (HS3) collection. The HS3 High-altitude Imaging Wind and Rain Airborne Profiler (HIWRAP) dataset contains precipitation and wind measurements from the dual-frequency, dual-beam, conically scanning radar that has been designed for the Global Hawk. HIWRAP's dual-wavelength operation enables it to map full tropospheric winds from cloud and precipitation volume backscatter measurements, derive information about precipitation drop-size distributions, and estimate the ocean surface winds using scatterometry techniques.
