GHRC News

GHRC DAAC published the GPM Ground Validation Two-Dimensional Video Disdrometer (2DVD) HyMeX dataset from the HYdrological cycle in Mediterranean EXperiment (HyMeX) which took place in Italy and France from September 30 to November 12, 2012. The 2DVD dataset provides data on raindrop size and precipitation drop size distribution and rain events. The data are in ASCII format. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5067/GPMGV/HYMEX/2DVD/DATA301

AV-6 in hangar D1 - Credit: NASAGHRC DAAC published the Hurricane and Severe Storm Sentinel (HS3) Flight Reports dataset. The HS3 Flight Reports dataset provides information about flights flown by the WB-57 and Global Hawk aircrafts during the Hurricane and Severe Storms Sentinel (HS3) campaign from 2012 to 2014. The HS3 Flight Reports include flight number, flight time (beginning and end), location of the flight (flight segments), flight purpose, and comments regarding the flight and mission. In addition, some reports include corresponding satellite imagery, maps of flight tracks and dropsonde locations, and plotted instrument retrievals. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5067/HS3/REPORTS/DATA101

GHRC is demonstrating the new Field Campaign Information Explorer tool at an online webinar on Wednesday, February 24, 2-3 pm EST. This tool features visual playback of mission flights, built-in data subset and ordering capabilities, and easy access to mission information. Please visit Earthdata to read more and register for this webinar.

The Global Hydrology Resource Center (GHRC) DAAC has published two additional datasets from the Hurricane and Severe Storm Sentinel (HS3) mission.

  • The HS3 Global Hawk Advanced Vertical Atmospheric Profiling System (AVAPS) Dropsonde System dataset provides data from the AVAPS dropsondes built by the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and used as the dropsonde system for the Global Hawk aircraft during the HS3 campaign. AVAPS dropsondes provide in-situ, high-vertical resolution measurements of atmospheric variables including pressure, temperature, humidity, geographic location, and winds, providing a vertical profile of the atmospheric conditions. DOI: 10.5067/HS3/AVAPS/DROPSONDE/DATA201
  • The HS3 World Wide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN) Storms dataset is a quality controlled subset of lightning data for the tropical storms studied during the 2012-2014 HS3 mission, to track and analyze lightning activity. These data were provided by the World Wide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN), a global, ground-based lightning sensor network operated by the University of Washington in Seattle. DOI: 10.5067/HS3/WWLN/DATA201

The GHRC DAAC hosted a Technical Interchange Meeting of ESDIS and the DAAC Managers on January 26-27, 2016. The focus of this meeting was to foster more collaboration among the DAACs. Specific collaborative efforts were initiated, to work toward a more similar user experience across DAAC web sites and user tools, and to explore use of the commercial computing cloud.
