GHRC News

The Global Hydrology Resource Center has published updated versions of two related datasets from the GPM Cold-season Precipitation Experiment (GCPEx) campaign, which took place from January 15 - February 29, 2012 in Ontario, Canada:

·      GPM Ground Validation UND Citation Navigation Data GCPEX V2 (DOI: 10.5067/GPMGV/GCPEX/NAV/DATA002)

·      GPM Ground Validation UND Citation Cloud Microphysics GCPEX V2 (DOI: 10.5067/GPMGV/GCPEX/MULTIPLE/DATA203).

The UND Citation is a Cessna Citation II Research aircraft, owned and operated by the University of North Dakota (UND), which carried a variety of research instruments during the GCPEX campaign. The Cloud Microphysics dataset includes measurements of cloud microphysics, state of atmosphere parameters, bulk aerosols, three-dimensional winds, and turbulence. Data were collected on twelve flights between January 19, 2012 and February 24, 2012. Both datasets have updated navigation data and Cloud Particle Imaging (CPI) probe images are now available for the Cloud Microphysics dataset.

GHRC DAAC Web Master Ajinkya Kulkarni attended DrupalCon North America 2016, held May 9-13 in New Orleans. DrupalCon is a gathering of the open source community behind the Drupal web content management system, on which the GHRC web site is built. Much of the technical focus of the meeting was on new features available in Drupal 8.

GHRC DAAC science team member and Earth System Science graduate student Amanda Weigel was awarded the Raskin Scholarship, which is offered by the Federation of Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) to cover expenses for a graduate student to attend and present at the ESIP summer meeting. Her research focuses on the geospatial modeling of natural hazards and land-atmosphere interactions in tornado genesis, which has been funded through the NASA DEVELOP National Program, the UAH Master’s Competitive Internship Program and the UAH Industry/University Cooperative Graduate Student Research Program. The GHRC DAAC published the GPM Ground Validation Dual-frequency Dual-polarized Doppler Radar (D3R) IPHEX dataset (DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5067/GPMGV/IPHEX/D3R/DATA101). This data was collected from May 3, 2014 to June 15, 2014 during the GPM Ground Validation Integrated Precipitation and Hydrology Experiment (IPHEx) held in North Carolina. The D3R is a fully polarimetric, scanning weather radar system operating at the nominal frequencies of 13.91 GHz and 35.56 GHz covering a maximum range of 30 km. The GPM Ground Validation Dual-frequency Dual-polarized Doppler Radar (D3R) IPHEx dataset is available in netCDF format.

Sara Graves, GHRC PI from UAH, attended the CODATA Executive Committee meeting that was held in Washington, DC on April 25-28. As Secretary General of CODATA and a member of the U.S. CODATA Committee, Graves invited key data leaders from several US agencies, including Kevin Murphy of NASA HQ to for a roundtable discussion on data topics of interest nationally and internationally.
