GHRC News

Global Hydrology Resource Center Distributed Active Archive Center (GHRC DAAC) Manager Dr. Rahul Ramachandran delivered an invited-author speech titled “Exploiting dark information resources to create new value added services to study Earth science phenomena” in the Earth Observing Data Science session at the 2016 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (IGARSS) symposium held in Beijing, China. Results from Dr. Ramachandran’s ongoing Advanced Information Systems Technology research project, “Illuminating the Darkness: Exploiting untapped data and information resources in Earth Science,” were also presented at the symposium, including the latest version of the automated data curation algorithm, the rules engine to automate analysis and visualization, and the deep learning application to provide image retrieval.

Dr. Sara Graves, UAH PI for the GHRC DAAC, represented the GHRC at the 2016 NSF EarthCube All Hands Meeting, held July 6-8 in Denver, CO. Dr. Graves led a session for the Council of Data Facilities (CDF) that includes representatives from multiple agencies' data centers. The annual meeting of the CDF will be next week at the Summer Meeting of the Federation of Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP).

GHRC system architect and software engineer Manil Maskey demonstrated his pyCMR software library to the Earthdata Unified Technical Committee (UTC) telecon on July 5. pyCMR is a client-side python library that abstracts CMR (Common Metadata Repository) API calls to a simple set of python functions that can be incorporated in client applications. The Global Hydrology Resource Center Distributed Active Archive Center (GHRC DAAC) has published the Hurricane and Severe Storm Sentinel (HS3) Global Hawk Navigation dataset (DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5067/HS3/NAV/DATA201). This dataset consists of the real-time navigation and housekeeping data that was acquired from various instruments aboard the Global Hawk including the navigation system and the Global Hawk flight computer. The data are in the Interagency Working Group standard format number 1 (IWG1), a simple ASCII comma-separated value (CSV) format supported by all NASA and NCAR aircraft.

The Global Hydrology Resource Center Distributed Active Archive Center (GHRC DAAC) provided data and software from the Hurricane and Severe Storm Sentinel (HS3) mission to the ESDIS Cumulus (Cloud-based data ingest, archive, distribution and management system) prototype. GHRC has published six data products from the HS3 mission, in CF compliant netCDF format, which is the standard format selected for the mission. In some cases, the data are also available in an alternate format that is widely used by a particular data community. The HS3 package provided to Cumulus includes links to the source data, the published data and a description of any processing done at GHRC. GHRC software provided includes any data transformation performed at the DAAC (netCDF format conversion or CF metadata updates), metadata generation, browse image generation, data ingest and archive routines.
