GHRC News

The Global Hydrology Resource Center Distributed Active Archive Center (GHRC DAAC) has published the GPM Ground Validation Two-Dimensional Video Disdrometer (2DVD) WFF dataset (DOI: https://dx.doi.org/10.5067/GPMGV/WFF/2DVD/DATA201). These data were gathered in support of Global Precipitation Mission (GPM) Ground Validation at the NASA Wallops Flight Facility (WFF) in Wallops Island, Virginia from June 7, 2012 to March 5, 2014. These data measured the size, equivalent diameter, volume, fall speed, oblateness, cross-sectional area of raindrops, particle concentration, total number of drops, total drop concentration, liquid water content, rain rate, reflectivity, and rain events, as well as recorded two side view optical images of each raindrop. The data are in ASCII format.

Two Global Hydrology Resource Center Distributed Active Archive Center (GHRC DAAC) team members attended a NASA class in Project Management Principles & Practices. Sherry Harrison (User Services lead and project manager of the AMSR Science Investigator-led Processing System – SIPS) and William Ellett (Systems Administration lead and project manager of the processing system for the Lightning Imaging Sensor on the International Space Station – ISS LIS) gained important skills in defining project tasks, roles and responsibilities, scheduling and risk assessment. Dr. Richard Blakeslee, ISS LIS Principal Investigator also attended the class, and together they focused on the Near Real Time processing and distribution of ISS LIS data for in-class exercises.

GHRC geographer and remote sensing expert Deborah K. Smith explains how the GHRC-developed Regional Air-Sea Interactions (RASI) helps trace the strong Tehuano winds of Mexico’s Gulf of Tehuantepec in NASA's Sensing Our Planet feature "Tracing the Tehuano."

The Global Hydrology Resource Center Distributed Active Archive Center (GHRC DAAC) has published the GPM Ground Validation Micro Rain Radar (MRR) NASA ACHIEVE IPHEx dataset (DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5067/GPMGV/IPHEX/MRR/DATA201). These data were gathered during the Global Precipitation Measurement Ground Validation (GPM GV) Integrated Precipitation and Hydrology Experiment (IPHEx) in North Carolina from May 1, 2014 through June 15, 2014. The dataset includes data from the Metek Micro Rain Radar (MRR) instrument, which is part of the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) ACHIEVE ground-based mobile laboratory. It is a vertically oriented frequency modulated continuous wave (FM-CW) radar that measures Doppler spectra, radar reflectivity, Doppler velocity, drop size distributions, rain rates, liquid water contents, and path integrated attenuation.

GHRC DAAC Manager Dr. Rahul Ramachandran and Systems Engineer Manil Maskey attended a meeting on August 4 in Washington DC with the ESDIS Cumulus (Cloud-based data ingest, archive, distribution and management system) prototype team. The meeting covered an overview of current HS3 ingest and archive processes and prototype software for use in the Cloud.
