GHRC News

Dr. Sara Graves, UAH PI for the GHRC DAAC, attended the Earth Science Data Symposium sponsored by the Committee on Earth Science and Applications From Space of the National Academies for Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, held October 4-5 in Washington, DC. She made a presentation titled “Continuing Challenges in the Exploration and Stewardship of Data.”

GHRC DAAC has published a new micro article on the Lightning Imaging Sensor. This article briefly describes the LIS instrument and its two platforms (Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission – TRMM, and International Space Station – ISS), and provides links to key LIS datasets and scientific publications. This represents the third of four major types of micro articles (weather events, research publication summaries, Earth observing instruments, and geophysical phenomena).

Several Global Hydrology Resource Center Distributed Active Archive Center (GHRC DAAC) staff attended the 2016 annual meeting of the GOES-R Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) Science Team, held September 27-29 at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. In addition to GLM, meeting topics included plans for the Lightning Imaging Sensor on the International Space Station (ISS LIS), the GOES-R field campaign to take place in 2017, and numerous other lightning sensors. GHRC DAAC Operations Manager Helen Conover made a presentation on the GHRC DAAC and its lightning data holdings. ISS LIS processing system team lead Will Ellett and software engineer Nathan Wharton as well as science team member Leigh Sinclair.

Of particular interest to the GHRC team were discussions on advances in technologies for Lightning Mapper Arrays (LMA). Several LMA datasets are hosted at GHRC DAAC. Sherry Harrison represented the GHRC DAAC and the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR) Science Investigator-let Processing System (SIPS) at the Workshop to Develop a Portfolio of Low Latency Datasets for Time-Sensitive Applications and the Land, Atmosphere Near real-time Capability for Earth Observing Systems (LANCE) User Working Group (UWG) meeting September 27-29, 2016 at NASA LaRC. Harrison provided the status of LANCE AMSR2 activities to the LANCE UWG. She also presented a poster, "Lightning Imaging Sensor on International Space Station,” during the poster session of the Workshop on September 27, 2016.

GHRC DAAC Operations Manager Helen Conover attended the AMSR Science Team meeting held September 22-23 at Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. She presented activities, status and plans of the AMSR Science Investigator-led Processing System (SIPS) and Land Atmosphere Near real time Capability for EOS (LANCE) activities at the GHRC DAAC.

2016 User Working Group

Global Hydrology Resource Center Distributed Active Archive Center (GHRC DAAC) held its User Working Group meeting September 20-21, 2016 in Huntsville, AL. The primary focus of this meeting was to introduce the UWG to the GHRC’s new science team and to preview the new software architecture and user tools. The DAAC also reported on 2016 accomplishments and provided responses to last year's recommendations from the UWG. The GHRC DAAC UWG is led by outgoing chair Dr. Christian Kummerow (Colorado State University), incoming chair David Wolff (NASA/GSFC/Wallops) and co-chair Dr. Jonathan Zawislak (Florida International University). Also attending were Drew Kittel and Steve Berrick from NASA's Earth Science Data and Information Systems (ESDIS) Project; Steve Kempler (GES DISC), Bob Downs (SEDAC), Suresh Santhana Vannan from Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) DAAC, Nettie Labelle-Hamer (ASF DAAC), and Anirudh Prabhu from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI).
