Will Ellett with "Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS) on the International Space Station (ISS) Activation, Assessment, and Operation in the First Six Months" poster

Will Ellett, GHRC’s project manager for the Lightning Imaging Sensor on the International Space Station (ISS LIS), attended the 6th Annual International Space Station Research and Development Conference, held July 17-20 in Washington DC.  Ellett presented a poster on “Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS) on the International Space Station (ISS): Activation, Assessment, and Operation in the First Six Months”, which was developed jointly by the ISS LIS Science Team and GHRC staff.

National Space Science and Technology Center, Huntsville, ALDr. Jack Kaye, Associate Director for Research of the Earth Science Division (ESD) within NASA’s Science Mission Directorate (SMD), visited NASA MSFC’s Earth science researchers at the National Space Science Technology Center in Huntsville, AL on July 6-7. GHRC DAAC Manager Dr. Rahul Ramachandran, Deputy Manil Maskey, and Operations Manager Helen Conover discussed the GHRC DAAC in the context of their ongoing and upcoming geoinformatics research.

GPM logoThe GHRC DAAC has published two datasets from the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission Ground Validation (GV) program.

  • GPM Ground Validation Micro Rain Radar (MRR) OLYMPEX dataset. This dataset contains measured and derived data from MRR instruments placed in four separate locations within the study region. The MRR is a Biral/Metek 24 GHz (K-band) vertically oriented Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FM-CW) radar that measures signal backscatter from which Doppler spectra, radar reflectivity, Doppler velocity, drop size distribution, rain rate, liquid water content, and path integrated attenuation are derived. Data were collected from October 31, 2014 through May 22, 2016, during the Olympic Mountains Experiment (OLYMPEX). DOI: 10.5067/GPMGV/OLYMPEX/MRR/DATA201
  • GPM Ground Validation United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Soil Moisture IFloodS dataset. A total of 15 stations were deployed near the South Fork River in North Central Iowa. The soil moisture probes measure hourly instantaneous measurements of the real dielectric permittivity, soil temperature, bulk electrical conductivity, and volumetric soil moisture. This dataset also consists of precipitation amount, air temperature, relative humidity, vapor pressure, wind speed, wind direction, and solar radiation measurements. Data were collected from April 17, 2013 through June 4, 2013, during the Iowa Flood Studies (IFloodS) Field Experiment. DOI: 10.5067/GPMGV/IFLOODS/PROBES/DATA301

Very high resolution lightning climatology revealed the new lightning hotspot as Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela. The GHRC DAAC has published a micro article describing “Highlights from Albrecht et. al's 'Where Are the Lightning Hotspots on Earth?’ publication.” This publication in the November 2016 issue of the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society (BAMS) described Albrecht’s research with the GHRC’s 16-year data record from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS). Albrecht’s resulting data product, the LIS 0.1 Degree Very High Resolution Gridded Lightning Climatology Data Collection, is also available from the GHRC.

The GHRC has published 5 GPM Ground Validation Rain Gauge datasets, 3 from the Olympic Mountains Experiment (OLYMPEX) campaign and 2 from the Integrated Precipitation and Hydrology Experiment (IPHEx). The OLYMPEX datasets contain data gathered during 2015-2016 on the Olympic Peninsula in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. The IPHEx Rain Gauge datasets contain data collected during Spring 2014 from multiple sites of the Southern Appalachian region of North Carolina.
