ISCU CODATA officers

Dr. Sara Graves, PI of the GHRC’s UAH team, attended a meeting of the Executive Committee of the International Council for Science: Committee on Data for Science and Technology (ISCU CODATA), held in Paris the first week of March, 2015. Dr. Graves is Secretary General of CODATA.

GHRC has published the RSS Monthly 1-deg Merged Wind Climatology netCDF dataset and its guide. This data set provides monthly means of wind speed and wind direction on a one degree grid, a 20 year climatology data file, and a cumulative data file containing monthly trends in wind speed anomaly. This data set is constructed from Remote Sensing Systems (www.remss.com) Version-7 microwave radiometer wind speed values. The merged wind climatology data comes from the following satellite radiometers: SSM/I, SSMIS, AMSR-E, and WindSat. These microwave radiometers have been carefully inter-calibrated at the brightness temperature level and the V7 ocean products have been produced using a consistent processing methodology for all sensors. The high quality ocean data is made available thanks to funding from the NASA MEaSUREs (Making Earth System Data Records for Use in Research Environments) project. This data set is available as both netCDF3 and netCDF4 formatted files.

The Global Hydrology Resource Center (GHRC) DAAC has published the annual update to the suite of LIS/OTD Gridded Lightning Climatology data sets. The annual update includes an additional year of data added to all of the data sets and a new version number (V2.3.2014) in all of the file names. These ten data sets offer full, annual, monthly and diurnal climatologies of lightning observed from space from May 1995 through December 2013, including both Optical Transient Detector and TRMM Lightning Imaging Sensor, at 0.5 and 2.5 degree resolutions. Both the LIS and the OTD instruments were developed by MSFC.

The publication describing these products and the method used to generate them was published in the journal Atmospheric Research. It is available (open access) at doi:10.1016/j.atmosres.2012.06.028.

The DAAC Managers Technical Interchange Meeting was held at po.daac at JPL

GHRC DAAC Manager Rahul Ramachandran (NASA/MSFC) and Operations Manager Helen Conover (UAH) attended the DAAC Managers Technical Interchange Meeting, hosted by PO.DAAC at JPL January 27-28. Dr. Ramachandran made presentations in the Cloud Computing and Virtual Collections sessions.
