IGARSS 2014

Global Hydrology Resource Center (GHRC) DAAC Manager R. Ramachandran participated in the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS) Administrative Committee meeting July 11-12 in Quebec City, Canada. He chaired two sessions at the International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS 2014) conference, July 14-18. The first session, titled “Advancing Science through Management of the Geospatial Data Lifecycle,” focused on the role standards play at each stage in the sequence of processes by which knowledge is generated from geoscience observations, simulations and analysis. The second session on "Implications of Big Data to Remote Sensing” explored the emerging big data technologies for processing and analysis of remote sensing data sets. Dr. Ramachandran also presented his work on ontology-based data curation in a poster session. In his role as the chair of the GRSS Earth Science Informatics Technical Committee (ESI TC), he held a technical meeting during the conference focusing on new ESI TC initiatives and future conference sessions.

Focused Technical Workshop

Global Hydrology Resource Center (GHRC) PI S. Graves made a presentation on “Considering the Way Forward for Data Science and International Climate Science” at the Focused Technical Workshop: Improving Data Mobility & Management for International Climate Science on July 14-16 in Boulder, CO at the NOAA David Skaggs Research Center.

ESIP Summer 2014 Meeting

Sara Graves, Manil Maskey and Helen Conover represented GHRC at the ESIP Summer Meeting July 8-11 in Frisco, CO. Conover helped organize the ESDIS Standards Office and Airborne Data Management sessions. In the poster session, the GHRC team presented an overview of GHRC, as well as work on developing a cloud-based collaborative workbench, and disaster preparedness and event analysis. They attended sessions on metadata, cloud computing, data analytics, US Geo, data lifecycle interoperability, disasters (Graves made a presentation), GCIS and ICSU WDS, among others, and had many fruitful discussions with other meeting attendees.

IFloodS image with disdrometer

GHRC published the GPM Ground Validation Two-Dimensional Video Disdrometer (2DVD) IFloodS dataset. This data was collected during the GPM Ground Validation Iowa Flood Studies (IFloodS) Field Experiment April through June 2013 in northeastern Iowa. The daily tar files contain ASCII data with information for raindrop size distribution and hydrometeors.
