CODATA Secretary General, Professor Sara Graves, chairing the Opening Ceremony

During the week of June 6-10, Dr. Sara Graves represented GHRC at three international meetings in which GHRC was highlighted. The Future Earth Secretariat Meeting was to discuss the data components of the new ICSU international science program with CODATA and World Data System executive offices. Graves presented an invited talk in the Big Data for International Scientific Programmes Workshop on “Using Big Data Analytics for Knowledge Extraction and Collaboration” and the Integrated Research for Disaster Risk Science Conference on “Sustainable Data Infrastructures For Integrated Disaster Science Research.”

GHRC published the GPM Ground Validation Advanced Microwave Radiometer Rain Identification (ADMIRARI) GCPEx dataset which measures brightness temperatures at three frequencies (10.7, 21.0 and 36.5 GHz) and at two polarized planes (H & V). The ADMIRARI is a scanning radiometer like its auxiliary active instruments, i.e., Micro rain radar and cloud lidar which provide reflectivity profiles and cloud base altitude at the same scanning angle as the radiometer. The radiometer retrieval typically provides rain/cloud liquid water path (LWP) and integrated water vapor, and for low water content cases it provides the total LWP and integrated water vapor. This data was collected during the GPM Cold-season Precipitation Experiment (GCPEx) located in Ontario, Canada, January 14, 2012 through February 29, 2012. GHRC has published the GPM Ground Validation CARE Satellite Overpass Images GCPEx dataset provides satellite overpass images for the Environment Canada’s Centre for Atmospheric Research Experiments (CARE) site in Ontario, Canada, as part of the GPM Cold-season Precipitation Experiment, January and February, 2012. The satellites tracks include the DMSP satellites numbers 15, 16, 17, 18, and 19. A list of starting overpass times per satellite and day is included.

GES DISC user working group

GHRC Engineer Kathryn Regner (UAH/ITSC) attended the GES DISC User Working Group meeting on May 6-7 at NASA GSFC. She presented GHRC Products and Services to the group and had valuable interactions with ESDIS and DAAC personnel as well as with UWG members.

GHRC student assistant Kaylin Bugbee

GHRC student assistant Kaylin Bugbee completed work on her senior capstone project using the GHRC’s Sediment Analysis Network for Decision Support (SANDS) datasets. The senior capstone project is an undergraduate research project conducted over two semesters during the senior year, required by the University of Alabama in Huntsville’s Earth System Science department. Kaylin’s project was "Spatial Analysis of Sediment Persistence: How Tropical Cyclone Events Affect Sedimentation in the Gulf of Mexico."
